What is the Best Age to Get an Orthodontic Treatment?

One of the most common questions we get at our orthodontic office is: what is the best age for early orthodontic treatment? The answer to this question depends on a few different factors. In general, however, we recommend that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the time they are seven years old. This allows us to identify any problems early on and start treatment if necessary.

When Is It Necessary to Visit the Orthodontist?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the ideal time to visit an orthodontist for consultation is around age seven. At this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, which makes it easier for the doctor to evaluate the bite and diagnose any problems.

However, it does not automatically mean that your child is going to undergo orthodontic treatment. The first visit is simply to determine whether there is a need for one. In some cases, the doctor may recommend waiting until the child loses all their baby teeth or until they are a bit older.

Benefits of Interceptive Treatment

Early treatment, also known as interceptive treatment, usually refers to orthodontic interventions that are meant to correct problems while the child is still growing. This is because it’s easier to move teeth when the bones are still soft. Orthodontic treatment at an early age can also prevent more serious problems from developing later on.

If your child does need treatment, the orthodontist will develop a customized plan based on their individual needs. This may involve wearing braces or clear aligners for a few years. In some cases, early treatment can even help reduce the amount of time that your child will need to wear braces as a teenager.

If they have a history of trauma to the mouth, thumb-sucking, or teeth that come in late, your child may be a candidate for early treatment as well.

Orthodontic Treatments for All Ages

While early treatment is often the best option, it’s not always possible or necessary. Orthodontic treatments can be successful at any age. So, if you didn’t get orthodontic treatment as a child, don’t worry—you can still benefit from it as an adult!

At Riverside Orthodontics, we offer a variety of different treatment options for patients of all ages. We would be happy to discuss these options with you and help you find the best solution for your individual needs.

#1 – Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common type. They are made of high-grade stainless steel and are very strong. Metal braces are less expensive than other types of braces and they work well for people with more serious orthodontic problems.

The brackets and wires are usually placed at the front of the teeth, but they can also be placed behind the teeth (lingual braces) for minimal visibility.

#2 – Clear Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are much less visible than metal braces. For this reason, they are often used on older teenagers and adults who have cosmetic concerns. Ceramic braces are usually more expensive than metal braces.

Nevertheless, they are as effective as metal braces in correcting orthodontic problems. Modern ceramic technology has also resulted in stronger brackets that are less prone to staining.

#3 – Clear Aligners (Invisalign)

Clear aligners are made of clear, plastic materials that are virtually invisible when worn. They are also removable, which means you can take them out for eating and cleaning.

Invisalign clear aligners are very popular with teenagers and adults because they offer a cosmetically pleasing option. They are also more comfortable than metal braces and do not require any special care. However, they are more expensive than braces and may not be suitable for all types of orthodontic problems.

We also offer Invisalign Teen, a version of clear aligners specifically designed for teenagers. It includes special features that cater to developing teeth and compliance monitoring for parents.
